Big News in the North Houston Theater World!

Big News in the North Houston Theater World! Over the past few months there has been a lot of buzz about the dual efforts of Applause and Houston’s Center Stage Theater. I have been working as Artistic Director for HCST for just over a year and have recently come on as Managing Artistic Director of Applause. What became immediately clear to me was that both companies share a common mission: Providing top quality training and productions for the many talented performers in the Houston area. For 15 years Applause’s focus has been on actors 18 and under. HCST has also done shows and camps for young actors, but their productions have included actors of all ages. Rather than competing with each other for talent and staff, HCST and Applause have decided to grow together, putting “community” back into community theater.

What does this mean for you? It means more options for future classes and camps, year-round performance opportunities, no “aging-out” of the system, families on stage together, performances in both intimate and large venues, higher quality training, and the combined efforts of the staff and outstanding volunteers from both houses. I am sure that you will agree that this is a win-win for everyone involved. We know that it is YOU who have made both organizations successful in the past and we are very excited about the future of theater in our community.

Over the coming weeks you may see several updates to our website and emails that you receive. Please check back often for all of the new and exciting things coming to HCST and Applause.

Applause Theatre presents Seussical

Posted in Applause Theatre, Member Pages on April 8, 2011 by nwhaa

April 8-17, 2011

Seussical is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! Tony winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Ragtime and Once On This Island) have lovingly brought to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie, and a little boy with a big imagination–Jojo. “Oh, the Thinks You Can Think” captures the show’s spirit of imagination, as the colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos.

The story centers around Horton the Elephant, who finds himself faced with a double challenge–not only must he protect his tiny friend Jojo (and all the invisible Whos) from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him, the only one who recognizes “his kind and his powerful heart.” Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant, in a story that makes you laugh and cry.

If you’re interested in tickets, please call 281-440-4111.  Online sales are sold out.

Applause Theatre presents The Sound of Music

Posted in Applause Theatre, Member Pages on December 17, 2010 by nwhaa

Performances: December 10 – 19, 2010

The Sound of Music  – The final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world’s most beloved musical.  When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain’s immediate service in their navy. The family’s narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre. The motion picture version remains the most popular movie musical of all time.

Director – Megan Blackmon
Musical Director – Kathy Elder
