Houston Dance Theatre – Nutcracker Ballet

Cypress Creek Christian Church will host a 9/11 Service of Remembrance at 4 p.m. this Sunday.  The service is open to the public.  Participants will include:

HFAC Actors Academy presents Anything Goes

Houston Family Arts Center Theatre and Actors Academy – Aug. 18-20

HFAC’s Academy Stage will come alive with the rousing tunes of Cole Porter’s Anything Goes, a high seas romantic adventure, August 18-20. This musical farce follows an eclectic group of ocean liner passengers, which includes an evangelist nightclub singer, society debutante, English gentleman, and wanted gangster Moonface Martin, on their journey from New York to London. Hilarity ensues as good men are mistaken for criminals, and young lovers realize that societal duty and their hearts’ desire may not go hand in hand.  Performed by talented teen actors, tickets are just $10 for these morning, matinee, and evening performances. Audiences just “cain’t say no” to the American classic musical Oklahoma!.  Rodger’s and Hammerstein’s ground-breaking show, Oklahoma!, was a box office smash when it opened in 1943 and continues to captivate the heart of America.  Houston Family Arts Center (HFAC) brings the production to the Berry Center, 8877 Barker Cypress Rd., Cypress, TX 77433 weekends, July 22-Aug. 6, 2011.

Theatrical & Musical Summer Camps in Houston

Applause Theatre
June 6-August 19

Applause Theatre is offering a morning and afternoon session for each of their ten 5-day Summer Musical Camps.  Morning 9:00-12:30 pm & Afternoon 1:30-5:00 pm. 

Enrollment is $215 for a single camp or $175 if you sign up for 3 or more camps.  If you are registering more than 1 child in your family you qualify for a 10% discount.

HFAC presents The Money In Uncle George’s Suitcase

Take one old geezer who likes to talk and talk…and talk!  Put him in a run-down ramshackle cabin in the woods…  add his two citified sisters and their families… throw in a will and a missing suitcase full of LOTS of money… and you have the formula for a weekend full of deception, arguments, and non-stop laughs!  Written by Houston playwright Pat Cook, this hilarious comedy starts with a frantic process of searching for the money and ends up rekindling old memories and a yearning for old fashioned values that used to be important to the family.  Directed by Tracy Clayton.  “George’s gift is much more important than mere money, even though the relatives don’t see it that way – at first…”

Recommended for ages 8 through adult.  Children under 3 are not permitted at Main Stage productions.  The Playwright, Pat Cook, will host a free talk on June 12 after the show.

HFAC presents The Trip to Bountiful

April 15-May 8, 2011

Pulitzer prize winning author Horton Foote’s poignant story of the aging widow Carrie Watts takes place in Houston in 1953.  Mrs. Watts imagines that if she can only return to her childhood home of Bountiful, she will regain her strength and dignity, but an adversarial  daughter in law constantly thwarts her attempts.  When she is finally able to make that visit, she returns to Houston with closure, secure in the knowledge that her life has been enriched by her last visit to her old home.  Directed by Sedric Willis.

HFAC presents auditions for The Money in Uncle George’s Suitcase

General audition info…
Actors can make an appointment by emailing auditions (at) houstonfac.com for an audition time slot.  Please be sure to include your desired role and phone number in your request.  Auditions will be performed in front of an audition panel including the director, assistant director, and producer.  Callbacks, if needed, will be held on Monday, April 11 from 7-9 PM.  

The audition will consist of a one minute memorized monologue (comedic preferred, but not required) and cold readings from the script.  Bring a resume & head shot or photo if you have them. There is no fee to audition and actors will be paid a $75 gas stipend at the conclusion of the run of the show.

Rehearsals begin…
Tuesday, April 12, 2011, and are on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM. A complete calendar of rehearsal dates will be available at auditions. One or two rehearsal conflicts can usually be accommodated except for the last two weeks of rehearsals.

HFAC presents Willy Wonka

Houston Family Arts Center’s spring family musical is this fun, lively show based on Roald Dahl’s classic children’s story of the world-famous candy man, Willy Wonka, and his quest to find an heir.  Young, good-natured Charlie wins one of five golden tickets hidden amongst thousands of Wonka chocolate bars. What have Charlie and the other four kids won? A tour through Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, led by the eccentric Wonka himself. The factory itself is like a fantasy world: crazy color schemes, wild inventions, secret rooms, busy Oompa Loompas, and lots and lots of delectable sweets. But Wonka has a hidden agenda, and during the tour he tests each child’s character and honesty.  Directed by Josh Clark.
